George Washington appears here as a single portrait, the kind of image that circulated widely in the years around the nation's centennial. The print is credited to G. F. Gilman, a name that points to a commercial maker of popular prints in the 1870s, when lithographs and engravings of the first president were sold to households, schools and patriotic societies. Washington had by then been turned into a national symbol, and images like this one helped fix his face in the public mind, a role that continued long after his death in 1799.
