Turned to the left, this color engraving is several copies removed from the original: James Barton Longacre worked from a miniature by Benjamin Trott, which itself followed Gilbert Stuart's portrait of Washington. Stuart painted the face from life in the 1790s, and his likeness became the standard image of the first president for generations. Longacre later served as chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, and prints like this one carried Washington's features into homes and schoolrooms across the nineteenth century.
