Stuart's Athenaeum likeness, painted from life in 1796 and now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is the source for this color halftone, which shows Washington's head and shoulders turned slightly to the left. The Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, a Boston firm, produced the print around 1929, when affordable color reproductions of national portraits were widely sold for schools and homes. Stuart's image later served as the model for the face on the one-dollar bill, which helps explain why it remains the most recognizable likeness of the first president.
