This color halftone reproduces Gilbert Stuart's Athenaeum portrait of George Washington, the unfinished oil that Stuart painted from life in the 1790s and that now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The print was made by the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, a Boston firm known for color reproductions, and its c. 1929 date places it in the period when Washington's likeness was widely reproduced in schoolbooks, calendars, and patriotic displays. The Athenaeum image is the source of the face most Americans recognize from the one-dollar bill, which helps explain why this reproduction circulated so widely.
