The image reproduces the Athenaeum portrait, Gilbert Stuart's 1796 likeness of George Washington, now held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Stuart left much of the background and coat unfinished, which gave the face a striking clarity and made this one of the most copied images of the first president. This print is a halftone color reproduction from about 1929, made by the Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company of Boston, one of the firms that produced color prints of famous paintings in the early twentieth century. Its dot pattern and flat color show how such reproductions were made before modern photographic printing.
