This is a portrait of George Washington, shown head and shoulders and turned to the left within an oval, printed in brown, red, and blue on white cotton. Printed cloth like this, often sold as handkerchiefs or banners, was a common form of political merchandise in the late 1800s, when candidates and parties used familiar national figures to promote themselves. The catalog record links the piece to the presidential contests and dates it to 1888, though that date is marked with a question mark and comes from an old caption card, so it should be treated as tentative. Washington's image appeared on campaign goods of many kinds because he was a patriotic symbol shared across party lines.
