Few images of Washington have been copied as often as the Athenaeum portrait, the unfinished head Gilbert Stuart painted in 1796, which now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This c. 1929 color halftone reproduces that composition, with Washington's head turned slightly to the left. The Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, a Boston firm known for color printing, made the reproduction in an era when painted portraits of national figures were often reproduced in inexpensive print form. The print shows how Stuart's image moved from a single canvas into mass circulation.
