A color halftone reproduction of Gilbert Stuart's Athenaeum likeness of George Washington, this print copies the face-forward, slightly turned head-and-shoulders pose that Stuart painted in the 1790s and that became one of the most copied images of the first president. Stuart worked from life, and the portrait's unfinished look and soft, reddish tones gave later printmakers a warm, familiar Washington to reproduce. Around 1929, when this print was made by the Boston firm Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company, the image was widely used in schoolbooks, patriotic displays, and commercial calendars, and the halftone process made it easy to produce in quantity.
