Rather than showing Washington the general or statesman, this color mezzotint presents him with his family, as the title *Washington and His Family* makes plain. It was adapted from a painting by Christian Schussele, a Philadelphia artist known for genre and historical scenes, and engraved by William Sartain, a leading mezzotint engraver of the city. Published in Rochester, New York, and printed by Irwin & Sartain in Philadelphia, it dates to about 1864, when Washington was often invoked as a symbol of national unity during the Civil War.
