This print depicts Washington's farewell to his mother, Mary Ball Washington, a visit that took place at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in 1789, shortly before he left to take up the presidency in New York. The emotional exchange shown here is largely a later invention, shaped by moralizing biographies that stressed his devotion to his mother. Published in New York about 1860, the print reflects mid-century audiences' taste for sentimental scenes of the founders. The date comes from an unverified shelflist card, so treat it as approximate.
