Currier & Ives issued this lithograph of George Washington seated with his cabinet around 1876, the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence, when publishers across the country produced patriotic imagery for a public looking back at the nation's founding. The scene refers to the executive departments Washington assembled in the early 1790s, when Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox and Edmund Randolph advised him and often disagreed with one another. The cabinet they formed became a lasting part of American government, and the print presents that early group as a model of national leadership.
