This print presents Washington in a domestic setting with his family rather than in the battlefield or public poses that dominate most of his portraits. It reproduces a painting by Christian Schussele, a Philadelphia artist known for genre and historical scenes, and the engraving was made by William Sartain in the mezzotint process, which produces the soft tonal gradations seen here. Its publication in Rochester, New York, around 1864 places it during the Civil War, when images of Washington were widely circulated as emblems of national unity and family virtue.
