The defining feature of this lithograph is that it presents Washington as a family man, a theme that appealed to 19th-century audiences. Washington and Martha had no children together, but Martha's two children from her first marriage, John Parke Custis and Martha "Patsy" Custis, grew up at Mount Vernon, and Washington helped raise them. The print was issued by William C. Robertson in New York at some point between 1830 and 1880, when such domestic scenes were widely circulated as patriotic and moral images of the founding generation.
