This lithograph sets the first president in a domestic scene, with George and Martha Washington shown together at Mount Vernon, their Potomac River estate in Virginia. Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, known for its colorful prints, issued the picture and registered its copyright in 1889, the centennial year of Washington's inauguration. Late nineteenth-century audiences often preferred such family images to battlefield scenes, presenting Washington as a husband and planter as well as a national hero.
