Here Washington appears not alone but with his wife, Martha, and her two grandchildren, the Custis children, whom the couple raised at Mount Vernon after their father died in 1781. Edward Savage both painted and engraved the scene, and this color version was published in Philadelphia and London in 1798, with its title given in English and French. The group portrait was painted during the years Washington served as president, and it presents the family as a domestic unit, a deliberate contrast to the military and political images of him that circulated widely in the 1790s. Notice how the children stand close to their grandparents, which underlines that emphasis on family.
