Few family portraits from the early republic are as recognizable as the one behind this lithograph, titled simply "Washington family." Nathaniel Currier published the sheet in New York sometime between 1835 and 1856, and it was finished by hand in color, a step many Currier prints received. Its subject appears to draw on the well-known group portrait by Edward Savage, which shows George and Martha Washington with their grandchildren. Currier's firm sold domestic and patriotic scenes like this one to middle-class buyers who wanted images of national heroes in their parlors.
