Martha Washington, wife of George Washington, is the subject here, shown in a hand-colored lithograph issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives. The print belongs to the company's long run of portraits of national figures, which were sold cheaply and reached a wide middle-class audience in the decades after the Civil War. Martha Washington, who was a widow with two children before she married George in 1759, became a stable domestic symbol in these prints, representing the hearth and family that supported the Revolutionary leader. The firm's hand-coloring, applied by workers using stencils, gives the image its bright, idealized tones.
