Louis Prang, a German-born printmaker working in Boston, issued this lithographic portrait of Martha Washington around 1864, during the Civil War years when Americans were eager for images of the nation's founding figures. Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (1731-1802) was a widow with two children when she married George Washington in 1759, and she became the first First Lady after he took office in 1789. Prang's firm produced many such portraits for home display and schoolrooms, so the print reflects a popular taste for domestic, respectable images of the Revolutionary generation. Its placement on the board under family life fits its focus on Martha as wife and mother rather than as a public figure.
