Few portraits of Martha Washington have been reproduced as often as the one Gilbert Stuart painted, and this color halftone carries that image into the early twentieth century through the Boston firm of Forbes Lithograph Manufacturing Company. Born in 1731, she was a widow with children when she married George Washington in 1759, and she later became the central figure of their household at Mount Vernon. Issued as No. 14 in a series of famous American pictures, the print reflects a period when affordable reproductions brought national figures and their families into homes and schoolrooms.
