Seen full length on horseback and facing left, this bronze Washington is the Morristown, New Jersey, memorial by sculptor Frederick Roth, a figure who stands out among the many Washington monuments on this board. Morristown matters to the story because the town hosted Washington's army during the winter encampment of 1779 to 1780, when the troops endured one of the harshest winters of the war. The photograph was made by a local studio, Curtiss of Morristown, but its caption card gives no date, so it is best read as a record of the monument as it stood when the picture was taken. The statue's pose and setting show how the town chose to remember that difficult winter.
