Crowned with a laurel wreath and turned to the left, this chalk drawing presents Washington as a classical hero rather than a plain farmer-statesman. It dates to about 1800, the year after his death in December 1799, when artists across the young nation produced memorial likenesses to meet public grief. The laurel, long associated with victory and honor in ancient Rome, was a common device in such tributes and signaled that Americans saw him as a figure of lasting renown. Executed in black and white chalk, the portrait belongs to a group of 1790 to 1810 portrait drawings in the Marian S. Carson Collection at the Library of Congress.
