Shown in profile facing left, with a laurel wreath set on his head, this black and white chalk drawing presents Washington in the manner of classical busts and coins rather than as a living sitter. The laurel was a long-standing emblem of victory and honor, and its use here fits the years around 1800, after Washington's death in December 1799 prompted a wave of memorial images. Chalk portrait drawings like this one were popular between 1790 and 1810, when artists produced quick likenesses that could be copied into engravings or keepsakes. The drawing belongs to the Marian S. Carson Collection at the Library of Congress.
