The entrance to the Monument grounds and its open green dominate the foreground, drawing the eye up to the Washington Monument's tall white shaft. Completed in 1884, the obelisk was among the tallest structures in the world, and by about 1911 it had become the defining landmark of the capital. The Detroit Publishing Company issued views like this one for travelers and armchair tourists, presenting Washington as a polished national showpiece.
