A 1934 view records workers cleaning the Washington Monument, with the caption card giving October 18 as the date. The obelisk was finished in 1884 after decades of stop-and-start construction, and its marble shaft had long been darkened by weather and city soot, so periodic washing was a practical way to keep the tallest masonry structure in the capital looking its best. The record comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so details about the crew and methods are best read as general rather than confirmed.
