Here Washington kneels alone in a snowy wooded landscape, a scene drawn from the familiar story of the general praying through the hard winter of 1777 to 1778 at Valley Forge. The tale comes from Isaac Potts, a Quaker who said he overheard Washington at prayer, and it became a favorite of nineteenth-century printmakers eager to show the commander's piety. The record credits the design to Lambert Sachs and the stonework to P. Kramer, and names Duval & Co. on the shelflist card, though these attributions are unverified and the print is undated.
