This photograph shows Theodore Roosevelt at the podium during an inaugural address in Washington, D.C., the moment when a president speaks directly to the crowd gathered for the swearing-in. Roosevelt took office first in September 1901, after the assassination of William McKinley, and was inaugurated for a full term in March 1905 after winning the 1904 election. Inaugural ceremonies of this era were held outdoors at the Capitol, where large crowds, dignitaries and reporters gathered in front of the building. Roosevelt's speeches stressed national strength, a reformist agenda and a more active federal government, and his forceful style made him one of the most widely recognized presidents of his time.
