Theodore Roosevelt took the oath for his second term on the east portico of the U.S. Capitol on March 4, 1905, and this color postcard shows that ceremonial setting. The card was issued by F.T. Israel, a Washington publisher that sold views of the capital to visitors and residents. Half-tone photomechanical printing made postcards like this one cheap enough to buy and mail, so images of the inauguration reached people far from the city. The card also records the Capitol's appearance in the early 1900s.
