Union Station opened in 1907 as the consolidated rail terminal for Washington, a Beaux-Arts building designed by Daniel Burnham that was set just northeast of the Capitol and meant to be seen as the city's grand front door. This chromolithograph, printed in Philadelphia by Breuker & Kessler, reflects the period's taste for color views of major civic buildings, which were sold to a public eager to see the new capital. Its appeal lies in how it presents the station as both a working railroad hub and a monument, with the bright printed colors giving the scene a polished, promotional sheen.
