The Capitol at Washington, as this 1902 view shows it, was a building still in the middle of its own growth. The dome had been completed in 1866, but the wings and the grounds around them were still being reshaped in the decades that followed. The Detroit Photographic Company, which made its name with hand-colored and tinted views of American landmarks around the turn of the century, produced a series of such scenes for travelers who wanted a souvenir of the national capital. Notice how the building's white expanse and its massive dome dominate the composition, as they did for visitors arriving on foot or by carriage.
