The panoramic format is what sets this print apart: at 7 by 46 inches, it stretches the Capitol and the Library of Congress across a long strip of gelatin silver paper, giving the viewer a sweep that a standard view camera could not match. Photographer Frederick W. Mueller produced it in 1904, a period when panoramic cameras and wide sheets were popular for recording civic landmarks and street scenes. In 1904 the Capitol was still a relatively new symbol of the national government, and the Library of Congress, which had opened its main building in 1897, was becoming a major center of learning in the capital. Together the two buildings show Washington's growing ambitions in the early twentieth century.
