The U.S. Capitol had been under construction for most of the nineteenth century, and this 1882 lithograph catches it at a moment when the building was largely complete but its great dome was still a relatively new feature. Printed in brown tones by the Courier Lithograph Company of Buffalo, New York, the tall sheet was typical of the large pictorial views that commercial printers sold to a public eager to see the nation's landmarks. Such prints often combined the building with surrounding grounds and street scenes, giving viewers a sense of the city as well as its government seat.
