From the Virginia hilltop of Arlington House, this view looks across the Potomac toward the national capital. The estate was built by George Washington Parke Custis, Washington's step-grandson, as a memorial to the first president. The print was drawn by P. Anderson and lithographed on stone by Fitz Hugh Lane of Boston, who later became better known as a marine painter. Notice how much open ground still lies between the scattered buildings, a reminder of how young the capital was in 1838.
