George Town and Federal City, or City of Washington is an 1801 aquatint that shows the young capital at the moment it was still mostly planned on paper and only partly built. Its title pairs the older settlement of Georgetown with the new federal city laid out by Pierre Charles L'Enfant and surveyed under the direction of Andrew Ellicott, and the view takes in the broad, grid-free sweep of avenues radiating from the Capitol site on Jenkins Hill. Published in London and Philadelphia, the print was aimed at buyers curious about a capital that Congress had only recently moved into, and it remains a useful record of how far the city's ambitious design ran ahead of its construction.
