Few prints of the Capitol show it from this angle, looking across the city from the old City Hall toward the west front. The lithograph was made in 1832 from a drawing by Thomas Doughty, a Philadelphia painter known for his landscapes, and printed at the Childs & Inman lithographic press in Philadelphia. In the 1830s the Capitol was still an unfinished building, and its west front faced a city that was growing slowly around the Mall. Views like this one were popular with Americans who had never visited the capital.
