The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., drawn from the west, was a subject that artists returned to often in the 1830s, when the building was still unfinished at its ends and the city was a young, sprawling capital. Augustus Kollner, a German-born lithographer and engraver who worked in Philadelphia, produced this watercolor view in 1839, and the western approach shows the building from the side that faced the Potomac and the unpaved slopes beyond the Mall. Such views were popular with Americans who had never visited Washington and wanted to see the seat of the national government, so the picture also records how the Capitol looked to viewers of its own day.
