Seen from the scaffolding of the Capitol's new cast-iron dome, this lithograph takes in the city's layout westward toward the Potomac and the Mall. Edward Sachse, a Baltimore printmaker known for color views of American cities, produced it through his firm E. Sachse & Co. The dome was still under construction when the view was made, so the picture captures Washington during a period of rapid building. Its unfinished Washington Monument and the open spaces between government buildings show a capital still growing into the plan laid out for it.
