From a vantage point over the Potomac, this color lithograph looks north across the city, with the Capitol set at the center of the view. Charles R. Parsons drew the scene for Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for popular views of American cities. In 1880 the Washington Monument was still unfinished, its shaft rising slowly on the Mall after work had stalled for two decades, so the print captures the capital during a period of ongoing building.
