Taken from the Capitol and turned eastward, this long panorama captures the rooftops and streets of Capitol Hill as they stood in 1909. Haines Photo Co. of Conneaut, Ohio, produced many wide-format city views in the early twentieth century, and this 45-inch print was built to hold an entire sweep of the skyline in one image. Look closely at the dense residential blocks, which show a neighborhood that would change considerably as the federal city grew in later decades.
