Pennsylvania Avenue runs toward the Capitol in this 1860 watercolor, with the National Hotel standing at the left edge of the street. The Capitol is still unfinished here, its dome not yet complete, a reminder that the building was being enlarged for years and that construction would continue through the Civil War. The avenue was the city's main ceremonial route, linking the Capitol with the White House, and hotels like the National served the members of Congress, visitors, and office seekers who filled Washington while the legislature was in session. The sheet bears the name A. Meyer and the notation No. 2.
