Boys in dark jackets and caps crouch and hurl snowballs across the Capitol grounds in this scene, which shows the young pages who ran errands on the Senate floor during the early twentieth century. Senate pages were typically schoolboys, often drawn from families connected to Washington politics, who carried messages, fetched documents, and kept the chamber running between sessions. A snow battle on the plaza offered them a rare break from their duties and a glimpse of ordinary boyhood set against one of the nation's most formal government buildings. The gelatin silver print format dates the picture to the decades before the 1930s, when such photographs were a common way to record daily life in the capital.
