The most distinctive thing about this 1817 drawing is that it is a floor plan rather than a view: it lays out the principal floor of the Capitol as architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe planned it, with the vestibule, library, Senate chamber and House of Representatives all set out in ink and wash. Latrobe was working on the building after the British burned it in 1814, and his designs shaped how the legislative halls were arranged and rebuilt. Plans like this one let legislators and builders see how the rooms connected and how light and circulation would work, which mattered in a building meant to house two chambers of Congress under one roof.
