Rather than a building or a single event, this engraving captures one moment inside the Senate chamber in 1850, when the body was consumed by debate over the Compromise of 1850 and the question of slavery in the territories. Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, the senators who dominated that era, were among the leading figures in those debates. Philadelphia painter Peter Frederick Rothermel drew the composition, and Robert Whitechurch engraved it for the Philadelphia publishers John M. Butler and Alfred Long. Printed in 1855, the image looks back on the crisis from a few years later, when sectional conflict had only grown more intense.
