A larger portrait of Speaker Schuyler Colfax anchors this albumen print, which gathers photographs of the representatives who voted for the resolution sending the Thirteenth Amendment to the states. Colfax presided when the House passed the measure on January 31, 1865, by a vote of 119 to 56, after an earlier attempt had failed the previous summer. The sheet's smaller portraits record the legislators who backed abolition in that vote, and the Powell & Co. studio produced the set in 1865, the same year the amendment was ratified.
