A 1917 color lithograph from the Hegeman Print company of New York advertises "United States Official Films," a poster for government-produced motion pictures shown to the public. It dates from the first year of American involvement in the First World War, when Washington began using film to explain the war and build support at home. The Committee on Public Information, created that April, was among the agencies producing such films, and posters like this one show how commercial lithography was put to work on wartime messaging.
