This color lithograph shows the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives in the south wing of the Capitol, a room the House had occupied since 1857. It was printed in 1866, the year the Capitol's cast-iron dome was finished, and that year Congress was debating Reconstruction in the wake of the Civil War. Edward Sachse & Co. was known for detailed views of American public buildings and cities, and prints like this one were popular with people who wanted to see the seat of federal government.
