Sweeping across the Potomac from the south, this 1869 view of Washington City shows the Capitol rising over the rooftops of a town that was still more village than capital. The chromolithograph was issued by E. Sachse & Co. of Baltimore, a firm known for bird's-eye city views printed in color for the American market. Its vantage point lets the viewer take in the Capitol's dome and the broad avenues laid out in Pierre L'Enfant's plan, at a time when the dome was still being completed during the Civil War and its aftermath. The print is a useful record of how the young city wanted to be seen just after the war ended.
