Seen from across the Potomac, this lithograph shows Washington City and Georgetown as two separate communities joined by open ground, with the Capitol's dome rising above a city still thinly built. Weber & Co. of Baltimore printed the view, and Casimir Bohn, a Washington publisher and bookseller, issued it locally, which is typical of the city views sold to residents and visitors in the years before the Civil War. Views like this are useful for seeing how sparse the capital looked in the late 1840s, when wide avenues were laid out on paper far ahead of the buildings that would fill them.
