This lithograph shows the Union army's encampments ringing Washington from the south around to the west, a view that makes the city's wartime situation easy to grasp. After Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, troops poured into the capital, which was vulnerable and close to Virginia, and they camped on the surrounding heights and open ground. Edward Sachse, a Philadelphia-born artist known for detailed bird's-eye city views, drew the scene, and the Washington firm of Casimir Bonn published it. Look closely at the rows of tents and the fortifications, which show how quickly the makeshift army took shape.
