Seen from across the Anacostia River, this view places the Navy Yard in the foreground and the Capitol at the center, with the Arsenal and the White House at the left. The scene shows how the federal core still sat among open ground and scattered buildings in the early 1830s. George Cooke supplied the original design, and William J. Bennett engraved the aquatint, which was published in New York by Lewis P. Clover. The record dates the view to about 1833, and the print appeared the following year, when color views like this helped Americans picture a capital still growing into its role.
