A Map of the City of Washington in the District of Columbia, issued in 1818, shows the capital while its streets were still largely on paper. Robert King's engraving lays out the grid of avenues radiating from the Capitol and the President's House, with open land and scattered buildings filling much of the plan. Maps like this were sold to officials, investors and travelers who wanted to see the city Pierre L'Enfant had designed and that Congress was slowly building. The gap between the orderly lines on the page and the sparse settlement on the ground is what makes this view worth studying.
